Pharma Reps, the Real Pros, and My Appreciation for Great Sales

Everyone wants your business
When you own a pharmacy, pharma reps come with the territory. They all want your business. For a long time, that was most of what I saw: one more person, one more pitch, one more ask. It's easy to lump them all together and treat every visit as something to get through.
I don't see it that way anymore.
Seeing the real pros
It took me a while to get here. Over time I've come to see, and actually understand, the difference between someone who is just asking for my business and someone who is genuinely good at selling. The real pros stand out. Once you start noticing them, you can't stop, and the contrast with everyone else becomes obvious.
That understanding changed how I feel about the whole profession. I've grown a real appreciation for great sales. It's not the number of people trying to sell me something that I appreciate. It's the ones who do it well. Great selling is a skill, and like any skill, the people at the top of it put in the work to get there. When I meet one of them now, I respect what I'm seeing instead of waiting for the pitch to end.
I once wanted this job
There's a part of this I don't often mention. I once wanted to do it as a career myself.
That's probably part of why my appreciation runs deeper than it might for someone else. I'm not looking at sales from the outside as something foreign. I'm looking at a path I once wanted for myself, and at the people who walked it and got very good at it.
What I take from it
The lesson for me is simple. When a lot of people want the same thing from you, it's tempting to treat them all the same. That's a mistake. Inside any crowd there are people who are excellent at what they do, and if you write the whole group off, you miss them.
So I've stopped writing pharma reps off. They all still want my business, and that's fine. That's the job. But the real pros deserve to be recognised for what they are, and I'm glad I finally learned to see them.
